SVYCA Explained:
Initiatives
From policy advocacy to community event planning, the Los Gatos-Saratoga team champions contributions toward cleaner, greener environments across the community. We also attempt to make our schools a more sustainable environment, through collaboration between LG and Saratoga.
2025 Initiatives and Events
Helped relaunch and grow the Los Gatos–Saratoga SVYCA Action Team, recruiting and onboarding new student members interested in youth climate advocacy.
Participated in the SVYCA Climate Leadership Academy, where members developed skills in climate policy, organizing, and community engagement.
Supported AC-to-heat pump transition policies in both Los Gatos and Saratoga, which ultimately passed unanimously in both towns. Our team helped advocate for these policies by submitting detailed written public comments and delivering public comments in support during town meetings.
Met with Congresswoman Gail Pellerin to discuss youth climate priorities, including concerns about offshore oil drilling, and shared perspectives on protecting California’s coastline and accelerating the transition to clean energy. In addition to our meeting, our team also submitted written comments and emails opposing offshore drilling.
Tabled at the JCC community event, where we spoke with attendees about youth climate advocacy, local climate issues, and ways community members can get involved in climate action.
Tabled at a local farmers market, engaging residents in conversations about climate change, sharing information about SVYCA, and encouraging community members to take climate action locally.
Organized and ran our Mindful Consumption campaign, including a community swap event, encouraging people to reuse items instead of buying new ones and raising awareness about how everyday consumption habits impact the climate. We also incorporated this campaign into our farmers market outreach by educating community members about sustainable consumption.
Helped campaign in support of sustainable transportation policies, raising awareness about the importance of public transit and climate-friendly transportation solutions.
2023-2024 Initiatives and events
Conducted a tree-distribution event on Earth Day, with over $6000 in sponsorships and about 500 native tree-saplings distributed to community members around LG and Saratoga.
Finalized the process of placing solar panels at LGHS.
Began the climate literacy program within our community, where high school students go to local public elementary schools each month and present on climate literacy to spread awareness.
